Tom Ford launches new plastic film alternative competition

In a world where the focus is shifting towards more sustainable products, research and development is critical in order to find viable alternatives to plastic. Innovation can come from surprising sources when it is prompted by the right support. With this in mind, Tom Ford and Lonely Whale’s 52HZ teamed up to launch the Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Award.

The challenge is to create new packaging solutions to replace thin-film plastic, which makes up about 46% of all ocean plastic pollution. This Materials Science competition has received over 140 applications from 39 countries on six continents. It is a global effort to find solutions to a problem that affects us all.

said Stacey Filly, CEO of GoSili, Inc. “It is time for sustainable change in plastic packaging, and we must take steps to implement solutions.” Each of us is responsible to the world around us. We’re excited to support the finalists for plastic innovation at Tom Ford and can’t wait to see what the future holds to replace plastic pollution. ”

For any system to truly work, it needs the right funding and support, especially when trying to launch a new product into the market. So in addition to simply promoting the competition, the Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Award awards industry leaders who have already committed to trying winning materials. TOM FORD International, Stella McCartney, Dell Technologies, GoSili, HP Inc, Herman Miller, Imperial Dade, LeClub and ROQ are all ready to complete experiments with newly developed packaging materials.

Tom Ford and 52 HZ brought together judges with a stake in the project who understood the problem and pledged to screen the applications for feasibility and environmental benefit. Some of these judges are: Don Cheadle, Livia Firth, Stella McCartney, Elaine Jakosky, Chief Impact Officer and Head of Sustainable Impact at HP Inc. and James Andrews, founder of Authenticated Ventures. There will also be members of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Board Tom Pepibi of Plastics Odyssey and Andy Johnson of ROQ.US, a team that will monitor and evaluate applications to ensure they are scalable and ready for market by 2025.

“Development of new, more sustainable materials such as those produced by the award is key to achieving our goal of 75% of products and universal packaging by 2030,” said Eileen Jakosky, Head of Impact and Head of Sustainable Impact, HP Inc.. The award not only stimulates exceptional science-based innovation – it provides a pathway to replace thin-film plastics and viable alternatives that will help protect our planet.”

There are winners everywhere in this competition. While the planet is the obvious one, there is a prize money of over a million dollars for the contestants. Once the award winners are selected, they will benefit from ongoing support for further testing and product development through these companies. The process essentially creates a customer base while the product is still in development, which increases the chances of a successful launch.

Finalists will be selected in early 2022, with winners announced in early 2023 and the Plastics Innovation Award will provide dedicated support to help finalists reach the market by 2025, “creating an inflection point in the fight against plastic pollution.”
