Marko Grilc: Snowboarder dies in accident, according to sponsors

A 38-year-old Slovenian man was fatally wounded in the head in a snowboarding accident on Tuesday, a police press release in Tirol, Austria said.

According to the statement, the man was part of a filming team exploring the terrain when the skater, who was not wearing a helmet, fell and hit his head with a snow-covered rock.

The statement concluded that despite efforts to resuscitate the Slovenian man by his team and resort staff, the victim died at the scene.

Two of Grilc’s sponsors – Burton Snowboards and GoPro – confirmed the snowboarder’s death via Twitter on Wednesday.

“It is with a sad heart we share yesterday that our dear friend and Burton Team rider Marco ‘Grillo’ Grilleke died in an accident while figure skating,” Burton Snowboard chirp.

“Our thoughts are with his fiancée, Nina, and their children, family and friends, who all shared his love and passion for snowboarding.”

a statment Of GoPro it read: “We are saddened to hear of Marko Grilc’s passing. He was a beloved member of the GoPro family and inspired us not only as a professional athlete, but as a father and a wonderful human being.

“He was a legend and we will really miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Grilc is survived by his fiancée and two children.

Born in Ljubljana, Grilc has become a prominent name in the freestyle skiing scene over the course of his long career.

According to the FIS website, the Slovenian made his debut at the Junior World Championships in Finland in 2002.

Over the course of an 11-year career in competition, Grilc scored nine consecutive podium wins – wins coming across Big Air events at the European Cup in Croatia in 2004 and the World Cup in London in 2010.

His last competitive appearance came at the World Cup in Copper Mountain, Colorado in 2013, and Grillic subsequently moved on to a variety of snowboarding related photography projects.

The 38-year-old has documented many of his travels on his YouTube channel, with his latest video, “Disconnected” – posted in March earlier this year – showing his time skiing in the Prokletije mountain range, which borders Kosovo. Albania and Montenegro.

“Snowboarding is so simple, it’s basically just ripping down the mountain on a piece of wood,” says Grilc towards the end of the video.

“Just the motivation you get from riding, from doing a sick streak, and the happiness I saw here was unreal. I’m sure this crew of people will have stories to tell for years to come.”
